{"id":1367,"date":"2024-09-17T00:22:26","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T04:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/clintonfirst.org\/fumc\/?page_id=1367"},"modified":"2025-11-18T20:02:06","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T01:02:06","slug":"back-pack-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/clintonfirst.org\/fumc\/fruitful-congregation\/missions\/back-pack-program","title":{"rendered":"BackPack Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1353252858090864.1073741844.131829826899846&amp;type=1&amp;l=cd96842f44\">BackPack Program<\/a> is 13 years old!\u00a0 Growing out of a desire to \u201cdo something\u201d about the difficult situations faced by many children of the community, the idea of a program to ensure that basic food items were available and accessible to children over the weekend was set into motion early in 2011.\u00a0 Now, approximately 220 students in need from South Vermillion elementary schools are able to take home a bag of food items in <a href=\"https:\/\/clintonfirst.org\/fumc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/41300455_1869377399811738_359380937521233920_n.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8766 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/clintonfirst.org\/fumc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/41300455_1869377399811738_359380937521233920_n-300x250.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"177\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clintonfirst.org\/fumc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/41300455_1869377399811738_359380937521233920_n-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/clintonfirst.org\/fumc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/41300455_1869377399811738_359380937521233920_n-150x125.png 150w, https:\/\/clintonfirst.org\/fumc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/41300455_1869377399811738_359380937521233920_n.png 371w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 177px) 100vw, 177px\" \/><\/a>their own backpacks most weekends during the school year.\u00a0 Typically, these bags include a juice box, a shelf-stable milk, two breakfast, two lunch and two fruit items. Students who are in need at the participating schools are eligible to enroll in\u00a0the BackPack Program. Enrollments are accepted at any time. Students just need to request a permission slip from their teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The BackPack Program is organized and operated entirely by volunteers. Several options were discussed with a weekend food program being selected.<\/li>\n<li>May 2011\u2014Launched four-week pilot program for 74 students at Central Elementary, using a church closet for food storage and a Sunday school classroom to pack.<\/li>\n<li>2011-12 school year\u2014Central had 110 participants to start the year and increased to 140 later in the year, as more families heard about the program.<\/li>\n<li>2012-13 school year\u2014Approximately 140 participants at Central.\u00a0 Moved into Sunday school classroom to allow for food storage and packing in one designated space and to handle the potential doubling of students served.<\/li>\n<li>February 28, 2013 the BackPack Program expanded to include students at Ernie Pyle and Van Duyn Elementary Schools with the help of a grant from the United Methodist Foundation of Indiana.\u00a0 Many more people from beyond Clinton First also began volunteering their time to pack\/deliver the bags and make trips to pick up food. 5,480 total bags, 606+ volunteer hours.<\/li>\n<li>2013-14 school year\u2014 Central, Ernie Pyle and Van Duyn approximately 230 students<\/li>\n<li>2014-15 school year\u2014Central, Ernie Pyle and Van Duyn approximately 220 students,\u00a0 7,676 bags, 846+ volunteer hours<\/li>\n<li>2015-16 school year\u2014Central, Ernie Pyle and Van Duyn approximately 220 students 7,352 bags, 881+ volunteer hours.\u00a0 Nutritional\/health information or activity inserts were added to the bags once per month.<\/li>\n<li>2016-2017 school year &#8211;<\/li>\n<li>2017-2018 school year &#8211;<\/li>\n<li>2018-2019 school year &#8211;<\/li>\n<li>2019-2020 school year &#8211;<\/li>\n<li>2020-2021 school year-<\/li>\n<li>2021-2022 school year-<\/li>\n<li>2022-2023 school year-<\/li>\n<li>2023-2024 school year-<\/li>\n<li>2024-2025 school year-<\/li>\n<li>2025-2026 school year-<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<form action=\"https:\/\/www.paypal.com\/donate\" method=\"post\" target=\"_top\"><input name=\"hosted_button_id\" type=\"hidden\" value=\"KCGW2B3TPA6LJ\" \/><strong>Would you like to support our community projects \/ programs?
